Reverie

In my mind’s eye
I see you;
Eyes like
Blue heaven,
Arms that held
Me safe against harm,
Skin so fine
I ached to lose myself
In the touching
Feeling warmth,
Silky-smooth
Muscle slipping, sliding
Beneath my fingertips,
My lips

And in the deep, still night
I watched you
As you slept,
Chest rising,
Stomach rippling,
Nostrils flaring,
And as you dreamed
I kept vigil
Banishing nightmares,
Breathing sweet
Imagination into your ears,
Brushing golden strands
Of hair from
Your face

And now, in the darkest hours
I lie alone on vacant,
Cold sheets
Devoid of warmth
The pillow beside me
Smooth, unmarked,
Scent of loss
Heavy in the air
With closed eyes
I curse God
Willing you to me
And I wait …
Will you come to me?
Or, shall I die to be with you?
